Glaucoma Surgery – Glaucoma is also known as the silent thief of sight. Glaucoma is an ocular condition caused by build up of pressure within the eye eventually causing optic nerve damage.

There is a small space in the front of the eye called the anterior chamber. Clear liquid flows in and out of the anterior chamber. This fluid nourishes and eliminates byproducts from nearby tissues. If a patient has glaucoma, either the fluid is produced more or the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye. This leads to fluid build-up, and increased pressure inside the eye.

Unless this pressure is brought down and controlled, the optic nerve and other parts of the eye may become damaged, leading to loss of vision. The disease usually affects both eyes, although one may be more severely affected than the other.Age,Thyroid problems,Diabetes Mellitus,High Myopia increase the risk of glaucoma.

There are two main types: open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma:

Symptoms of primary open-angle glaucoma

  1. Peripheral vision is gradually lost. This nearly always affects both eyes.
  2. In advanced stages, the patient has tunnel vision.

Symptoms of closed angle glaucoma

Donec posuere vulputate arcu. Quisque rutrum. Curabitur vestibulum aliquam leo. Nam commodo suscipit quam. Vestibulum ullamcorper mauris at ligula.

  1. Eye pain, usually severe.
  2. Blurred vision.
  3. Eye pain is often accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting.
  4. Lights appear to have extra halo-like glows around them.
  5. Red eyes.
  6. Sudden, unexpected vision problems, especially when lighting is poor.

Treatment includes medications, laser & surgery.
